Slate is perhaps best known for its use as a roofing material given its low water absorption rate.  However, it is also commonly used for interior and exterior walls and flooring, as well as fireplaces, countertops, furniture, and water features.  It is a metamorphic rock composed of clay or volcanic ash, and comes in the form of tiles, slabs, strips, or chips which are used for gardens or driveways.
